I’ve been a professional gardener for over twenty years, and one of the tools I use the most is the Felco 2 bypass pruner. I’ve had many brands of pruners over the years, some of which literally crumbled in my hand while cutting a small branch. (I won’t give the name brand here, but it rhymes with whiskers.) Others always seem to rust and become squeaky with use. The only pruners I like are the Felco 2 hand pruners. Nothing else even comes close.
I think it’s important when you have a passion about something that requires tools, like gardening, that you buy high quality tools. There’s a certain pleasure in using a nice tool like the Felco 2 pruner. I take out my Felco 2 and I know it’s going to work just as it should. They have a nice grip and a blade that stays sharp with minimal maintenance. The Felco 2 also lasts for a long time and you can get a cool holster that clips on your belt.
I use my Felco 2 pruners for many tasks in the garden.
- Light pruning on trees and shrubs. They can easily cut through branches about one inch in diameter.
- I use them to cut down perennials in the fall, and cut down ornamental grasses
- Great for deadheading flowering plants like roses.
- Trimming back unruly annuals
- I also use them for sprinkler work like cutting poly pipe and tubing.
Basically Felco 2 pruners are good for hard work and delicate work.
Felco 2 pruners stand up to a lot of abuse. They are Swiss made (I hear that’s a good thing). I drop them on paths and concrete. I’ve left them outside, overnight in the rain. I use them to cut through roots covered in mud and they in turn get covered in mud. They never have rusted on me. The only maintenance I do is a little all purpose oil like WD40 or whatever is available, and a little sharpening with a garden tool sharpener.
Maybe it sounds silly, but I really am passionate about my pair of Felco 2 pruners. And I wanted to share my appreciation for a good quality tool that I use everyday, and has served me well over the years.
